Intrahepatic Stones in Korean

Abstract
To know the present status and characteristics of intrahepatic stones in Korean, we collected and reviewed all the cases of intrahepatic stones , including our own 49 cases, reported in Korean literatures during last 15 years. The following results were found out.
1) The rate of intrahepatic stones(689 cases) to total cholelithiasis(4397 cases) was 15.7%.
2) The sex ratio revealed slight female preponderance(1: 1.27), and the peak incidence was noted in the 4th decade(26.0%).
3) The symptom duration¡¯s were long in general, and about one third of the patients had duration¡¯s of 5 years or more.
4) Most of the intrahepatic stones were scattered in both lobes of the liver(56.5%). In cases of localized form, left lobe stones(30.6%) were more common than right lobe ones (10.1%).
5) The incidence of retained stones after operation was 52.0%.
6) Sixty five cases had associated diseases, and parasitic infestations(ascariasis, liver flukes) were most common.
7) Postoperative complications were observed at the rate of one complication per 2. 7 patients, and they were wound infection, bile leakage, hemorrhage and sepsis in its order.
8) Operative mortality was 5.5%, and the main causes of death were sepsis, hepatic insufficiency, hepatorenal syndrome, respiratory failure and bleeding in its order.
